I recently read the book: How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind by Dana K. White. I LOVE what Dana had to say about containers and the idea of containment. She talks about letting your home make the decisions on HOW MUCH it can handle and hold on to. An example of this is identifying a bin or container to store your kids’ stuffies and making the decision that EVERYTHING must fit. This blends well with the one in/ one out rule. This can be very useful with small children because a container offers a visual for them to understand the limits of space. It also helps them identify the things that really matter to them. As a result, they learn to hold on to the stuff that truly brings them joy. No, this won’t happen overnight, but my hope is that it will be a lesson that has lasting power through adulthood.
